Overview
During rapid acquisition-led growth, wecolab partnered with an African energy and mining company to help align thousands of employees from multiple legacy mining operations into one unified organisation. By creating a central organisational framework and embedded communication system, the business established a shared identity, strengthened leadership alignment and sustained momentum through large-scale transformation.
The challenge
Most large-scale companies grow gradually. This organisation expanded during a period of significant structural change, acquiring multiple thermal coal operations from global mining groups between 2017 and 2021. What emerged was not simply a larger mining business, but a new South African energy company employing approximately 15,000 people across coal mining, beneficiation and renewable energy operations.
The challenge was integration. Thousands of employees from different operations, cultures and leadership environments needed to align behind one vision, one way of working and one organisational identity. Operational continuity, growth ambitions and diversification strategies could not succeed without cultural integration and organisational momentum.
Starting inside
wecolab developed a central organisational framework that unified principles, behaviours and ways of working into one accessible model.
Bringing together multiple operational systems, cultures and leadership approaches, the framework is a shared reference point that enables consistent communication, stronger leadership alignment and a common language for decision-making and behaviour.
Activating influence
The focus was not simply communicating change, but helping people understand their place within it. By creating a shared organisational identity, communication could actively align — giving leadership and change communication a practical mechanism for engaging employees.
Alignment became a strategic lever for integration, culture-building and organisational cohesion across operations, and an ongoing framework to communicate and reinforce the organisation’s direction.
