Safety culture and behaviour change for an African energy and mining company.

By combining emotional storytelling with practical operational learning, the programme focussed on shared cultural responsibility for safety across more than 4,500 staff working at the coalface.

Overview
wecolab partnered with a South African mining company to strengthen safety engagement across a large frontline workforce during a high-risk operational period. By combining emotional storytelling with practical operational learning, the programme focussed on shared cultural responsibility for safety across more than 4,500 staff working at the coalface.
The challenge
Safety is the organisation’s defining measure of success. As the November/December/January high safety-risk operational period approached, leadership needed to reinforce vigilance in its demanding mining environments. The organisation had established safety frameworks and commitments in place. However, like many safety programmes across heavy industry, in this period there is increased potential for these commitments to become procedural rather than personal.
Starting inside
wecolab works inside organisations to translate leadership and strategic intent into cultural momentum. Working closely with safety, compliance and operational team leaders, the focus was to make safety personal — and make it real — at a time when personal connections feature strongly in the collective consciousness.
Activating influence
The campaign extended beyond the workplace and into the communities employees return home to every day. Family members recorded personal messages asking loved ones working in mining operations to return home safely. Shared across the workforce, these messages framed safety as not only a professional imperative, but a personal commitment too.
Instead of hearing instructions from management, employees heard directly from the people waiting for them at home.
Activating influence
The second element focused on operational learning. A podcast series explored real mining incidents through conversations with injured workers, safety investigators and technical specialists involved in understanding the events. Lessons typically contained within investigation reports became accessible, practical and relatable.
Rather than abstract warnings, employees heard first-hand accounts of how incidents occurred, the consequences involved and the preventative measures required to avoid recurrence.
Impact
By combining emotional connection with practical insight, the initiative became a widely shared movement. The work reinforced the organisation’s commitment to visibly felt leadership engagement. Zero fatalities recorded.
The programme received recognition across the broader mining sector and was referenced at leading industry forums, including Mining Indaba and Africa Mining Week.
Ongoing momentum
When leadership intent connects with the lived experience of the workforce, safety embeds within culture. And culture creates momentum.
Instead of hearing instructions from management, employees heard directly from the people waiting for them at home.
